Dallin is fortunate enough to have joined the Youth Summer Reading Program at our local library. They have all sorts of fun activies and prizes for reading or, in Dallin's case, being read to.
The first activity that he participated in was the T-shirt day. He got to color a picture with crayons and then the picture was ironed onto a cotton T-shirt and the color from the wax crayon melted onto the shirt. He had a bit of help from Paul and I to get the outline drawn, but his signature scribble is still visible (although not in the pics that we took). He didn't care to have his picture taken but he was excited to wear the finished shirt. (Front of shirt above, and back of shirt in the struggling pic below) The theme is: "Get a Clue? Read!" or something like that.
Today for the activity, we went to see "Fashoo the Fool". He's a magician. Throughout the whole show, he couldn't find his rabbit. He looked every where for him. Meanwhile, he kept warming up his coffee in the microwave located at the side of the room. At the very end he had a volunteer come up and point a wand at the rabbits cage, but the spell hit the microwave instead and out came the bunny! It was pretty funny! He had a boy who was 11 come up and do a trick where Fashoo would put a sword through his neck. When he got the sword through, the sword got "stuck" so Fashoo asked the kids dad whether he wanted his boys head or body back. The kid started to look really sick, like he was going to pass out. I was so worried for him. The magician noticed and bent down and tapped both of his knees, which were locked. He then explained to all the kids what happens when you lock your knees and helped the kid to his seat. It kind of made me mad, though, because the dad (who works for the library) didn't budge. He just laughed and said, "He's fine." The kid looked like he was about to fall over and the dad laughs. Wow! (Off the soap box) But we did have fun otherwise. And now, Paul and I are also members of the Summer Reading Program (the adult one). Paul got a free mug and I got a free tote to carry my books in. Okay, so maybe we were a little too excited about our free gifts for joining. But hey, when Dallin joined, he got to go to a party where he got prizes and candy and games. So fun! I used to take Alex to the library for reading day but we stopped because alex was more interested in running down the aisles of the library than listening to any stories.
